What this page measures

Every dollar the US federal government obligates to a contractor is recorded in USAspending.gov, the official spending transparency database run by the US Treasury under the DATA Act. This page queries that database live and rolls up the totals for a curated set of technology and AI vendors.

Numbers shown are prime-contract obligations — the dollars committed to a vendor when an award is signed or modified. That's the headline number used in most reporting on federal spending. It is distinct from outlays (money actually disbursed, which can lag obligations by years) and from subaward flow-through (money a prime contractor passes to subcontractors, which is reported separately and is noisier).

Why some vendors show $0

Many of the most-discussed software and AI vendors — OpenAI, Anthropic, Snowflake, Databricks, Nvidia, CrowdStrike — show little to no direct prime-contract spend in any given year. That doesn't mean they have no federal customers. Federal procurement strongly favors purchasing through pre-negotiated GSA Schedule contracts held by resellers like Carahsoft, Insight Public Sector, and SHI International. When a federal agency buys an OpenAI license through Carahsoft, USAspending records the obligation against Carahsoft, not OpenAI.

For a fuller picture of an AI vendor's federal footprint, check the integrator and reseller numbers too. The AI-native vendors that do show large direct numbers — most prominently Palantir — are the exceptions: they sell directly to defense and intelligence agencies on contracts written specifically for their products.

Fiscal years and freshness

The federal fiscal year runs October 1 through September 30. FY 2025 ended Sep 30, 2025; FY 2026 is currently in progress. Award data flows into USAspending continuously, with most transactions appearing within a few weeks of the contract action. Recent months may still be filling in.

Long-tail search

The vendor grid above is a curated list of major tech and AI vendors. To look up any other vendor — including smaller AI startups, hardware manufacturers, regional IT shops, or specific subsidiaries — type their name into the search box. The page sends your query to USAspending's recipient search and shows the resulting totals.
