About this data

Monthly employment estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. Series are seasonally adjusted so month-over-month numbers reflect actual trend rather than the usual hiring rhythm of the calendar year. Values are in thousands of jobs.

"Computer Systems Design" (NAICS 5415) is the cleanest read on the software / IT-services industry — it covers custom programming, systems integration, IT consulting, and computer facilities management. The "Information sector" (NAICS 51) is broader, capturing telecom, broadcasting, publishing, and motion pictures alongside software. "Software Publishers" (NAICS 5132) is the narrowest cut — companies whose primary business is publishing software. The shaded band on the chart marks the official NBER recession dates within the window.
