History

Opened in 1936; grew into a major hub through US Airways' (formerly USAir, formerly Piedmont) Charlotte expansion in the 1980s and 1990s. After the 2013 American Airlines / US Airways merger, Charlotte became one of American's two southern east-coast hubs alongside Miami, and the second-busiest hub in the AA system after DFW.

About this profile

Reference data (codes, coordinates, elevation, runways, owner, opening date) is curated from each airport's official authority page, the FAA's airport reference system for US airports, NAV CANADA and Transport Canada for Canadian airports, and AFAC and the operating concessionaire for Mexican airports. Latest passenger figures are CY 2023 totals where confidently sourced.

Live METAR and TAF are fetched from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center on each page load. NOTAMs (US airports) are fetched from the FAA NOTAM Search. If a source is unreachable when this page loads, the corresponding section displays an "unavailable" message rather than a blank or stale value.

This data is re-verified on a recurring monthly cadence aligned to the FAA's NASR 28-day cycle.
