History
Opened in 1928 as the first major airport in the New York metro area, predating both LaGuardia (1939) and Idlewild/JFK (1948). Renamed Newark Liberty after September 11 in tribute to the World Trade Center workers and rescue personnel from northern New Jersey. United Airlines' main east-coast international gateway, inherited and expanded from Continental Airlines in the 2010 merger.
