History
Opened 1929 as Merle Fogg Field; converted to a US Naval Air Station during WWII. Spirit Airlines is headquartered just north in Dania Beach and runs its primary hub here; JetBlue uses FLL as its main Caribbean and Latin America gateway. Significantly cheaper to operate from than nearby MIA, making it the preferred south Florida airport for ULCCs.
