Rock Shooter is the canonical physics-on-a-2D-plane-with-momentum arcade game. A triangular ship in a wraparound playfield rotates, thrusts, and shoots. Rocks drift; a bullet hit splits a large rock into two medium rocks, a medium into two small rocks, a small to dust. Clear the waves on your own — or add AI rival ships and fight a last-ship-standing dogfight on the same field.
The format was invented in 1979 by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg at Atari. The most-recognized name is a registered trademark of Atari, Inc; this page uses Rock Shooter for clear trademark distance.
Everything happens in your browser — physics, the rival AI, collision detection, and scoring all run in-page. Nothing is sent anywhere, no account, no leaderboard. Your high score, best wave, and games played are kept in this browser's local storage.
Controls (keyboard). ← → rotate. ↑ thrusts forward — the ship keeps drifting after you let go. Space fires. Shift hyperspace — random teleport, 10% chance of self-destruction. P pauses.
Controls (touch). Five HUD buttons appear over the corners of the playfield on phones and tablets.
Classic (0 rivals). A bullet hit on a large rock splits it into two medium rocks; a hit on a medium rock splits it into two small rocks; a small rock to dust. Score: 20 pts large, 50 pts medium, 100 pts small. Three lives. Clear a wave and the next one arrives with more rocks — survive as long as you can.
Dogfight (1–5 rivals). You plus up to five beginner-AI ships, three lives each. Friendly fire is a toggle on the start screen: on, an enemy bullet or a ship-to-ship crash also costs a life — a real shootout; off, ships pass harmlessly through each other and each other's shots, so only the rocks (and a bad hyperspace jump) can thin the field. Either way you have three lives, lose all three and you drop out and spectate, and the last ship flying wins. Rocks keep drifting through as shared hazards and the field refills wave by wave.
Wraparound. Every entity wraps at every edge. A ship, rock, or bullet that leaves one side re-emerges from the opposite side.
