How to play

The puzzle. Read the scenario at the top of the board, then read the numbered clues. Each clue tells you something definite about the relationships between people and their attributes (or items, or whatever the scenario is about). Use those clues to deduce, by elimination, exactly which person goes with which set of attributes.

The grid. The cross-reference grid is your deduction tool. Each cell sits at the intersection of one item from one category and one item from another. Click a cell to mark it: × means "these two cannot go together," means "these two must go together," and empty means undecided. Click cycles empty → × → empty.

Right-click and long-press. Right-click on a cell goes straight to . Long-press on touch goes straight to .

Auto-fill. When a row or column inside a sub-grid has all but one cell crossed out, the page auto-fills the remaining cell as — the deduction is forced. When a lands, the page also crosses out the rest of that row and column inside the sub-grid (since each item pairs with exactly one item from each other category). Cross-sub-grid implications ("if Alice is going to Iceland and Iceland is in May, then Alice is going in May") propagate automatically too.

No-guess. Every puzzle on this page can be solved by pure logical deduction. If you get stuck, the next deduction is in there — press Hint.

Hint. Press Hint (or H) for a one-line explanation of the next deducible cell. The page never places the mark for you.

Clue strikethrough. Click a clue once to highlight it. Click it again to mark it consumed (it gets a strikethrough). This is a personal organizer — the engine doesn't track which clues you've used.

Sizes. Easy ships a 3-category puzzle with 4 items each. Medium adds a 4th category. Hard expands to 5 items per category. Expert is 5 categories with 5 items, the densest standard size.

Nothing leaves your browser. The scenario, the clues, your marks, the timer, and your personal best all stay on this page. Generated fresh each time you press + New puzzle.
