How to play
The rules. Guess the 5-letter word in six tries. After each guess, the tiles change color: GREEN means the letter is in the word AND in the right position; AMBER means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position; GRAY means the letter isn't in the word at all.
Typing. Use your physical keyboard or tap the on-screen one. Enter submits, Backspace deletes. A guess must be a real English word in the page's word list — bogus letter combinations are rejected with a brief shake and a "Not in word list" toast (no penalty — just try another).
Hard mode. When on, every subsequent guess must reuse every letter that's been revealed as green or amber. It's the same puzzle, but you can't “throw away” guesses to test new letters — each guess has to honor what you already know. Toggle it before your first guess of a puzzle; the mode locks in once you start.
Repeated letters. Each letter of the answer only "counts" once. If you guess two E's and the answer has one E (in some position), one of your E's will color in (green if positioned right, amber otherwise) and the other goes gray.
Today vs. Practice. The Today tab is the daily puzzle — the same answer for every visitor on the same calendar date. Wins and streaks tally on the daily. The Practice tab is unlimited random puzzles; practice runs don't affect daily stats.
Share. After a daily solve or loss, the Share button copies a spoiler-free emoji grid of your run to the clipboard — paste it anywhere, no link spam included.
About this page
Word Five is the boring fidelity take on the popular 5-letter-word-guess format. Every visitor sees the same daily puzzle, picked deterministically from the calendar date by a stable hash function in your browser — no server, no leaderboard. The word lists are inline in the page: a hand-pruned solution list of about 2,500 common English words (for the daily answer) and a wider list of legal guesses derived from a public-domain English-word dictionary.
Nothing leaves your browser. Your guesses, your streak, your settings, and the share string are all local. Stats are kept in localStorage; clearing site data resets them. There are no accounts, no leaderboards, and no telemetry beyond the site-wide page-view counter. The word lists are reviewed quarterly to prune proper nouns and brand names that drift into the frequency tier.
