French Open 2026: Courts

Courts
The whole tournament happened at Stade Roland-Garros, on the western edge of Paris — eighteen championship courts inside one set of gates, from Court Philippe-Chatrier under its roof down to the outside courts along the Allée Marcel-Bernard, with one of them sunk among the greenhouses of a botanical garden. The plan below draws every court where it actually sat, to scale, from surveyed footprints — and each one opens to exactly which matches were played on it.

The centre court, and the stage for both singles finals. Built in 1928 for France’s Davis Cup defence — the same commission that created the stadium itself — and named in 2001 for Philippe Chatrier, the federation president who led tennis back into the Olympics. It seats 14,962 on terre battue, and since 2020 a retractable roof has closed over it, ending nine decades of rain-delayed finals and opening the door to the night sessions the tournament now schedules here.

The second stadium, opened in 1994 and named for Suzanne Lenglen — the six-time champion of the 1920s whose game made women’s tennis a headline act. It seats 10,068, and at the 2024 edition it gained what Chatrier got four years earlier: a retractable roof, its pleated canvas design a nod to Lenglen’s silk dresses, making Roland-Garros a two-roof tournament and all but rain-proofing the second week’s biggest courts.

The newest and strangest-beautiful of the show courts: a 5,000-seat bowl sunk half below ground among the greenhouses of the Serres d’Auteuil botanical garden, opened in 2019. It is named for Simonne Mathieu, champion here in 1938 and 1939, who then commanded a Free French women’s corps in the war — the only show court at a major named for a resistance leader. Spectators walk in through plant collections; the court sits in a glass frame.

Why is there no Court 1?
The numbered courts run 2 through 16 — there is no Court 1. There used to be: the round, intimate bowl nicknamed the “bullring,” beloved and cramped, which stood beside Chatrier from 1980 until it was demolished in 2019. Its replacement is not a number at all — Court Simonne-Mathieu, the sunken glass-framed show court in the botanical garden, absorbed its role, and the site of the old bullring became an open lawn. The count simply never closed back up: the outside courts still start at 2.
And yes, there is a Court 13 — no superstition skips it here either; the outside courts count straight through. The three show courts carry names rather than numbers, and they are the only courts on the grounds with published seat counts: Chatrier’s 14,962, Lenglen’s 10,068, and the 5,000 in the greenhouse bowl. Court 14, the biggest of the numbered courts, has real stands and hosted a full slate; Courts 15 and 16 belong to the qualifying week, so their 2026 slates here are empty — honestly so.
