The Grandstand ran nearly four hours late and Jovic and Frech did not begin until after 9pm on Tuesday. Frech broke twice for 3-0 before the 14th seed, the only 18-year-old in the world's top 40, reeled off four games. At 4-3 Jovic slipped in the drizzle, lost the point and asked umpire Aurélie Tourte to replay it: “You saw me. I literally, I didn't even run for the ball.” Tourte refused, Frech held for 4-4 and play was abandoned. Twenty-two hours later Jovic came back hitting harder; Frech survived one game serving to stay in the set, then lost the next, 7-5. She missed a smash at 0-30 in the sixth game of the second and was broken, broke straight back, then lost serve from three game points, and Jovic saved three break points to close it out. Between them they were broken ten times in 2hr 12min; Jovic finished with 27 winners to ten and won 78% of her first-serve points to Frech's 39%.

Jović. The 18-year-old Californian is the youngest seed in the women's draw — 14th, off a 31–18 season that has been the American tour story of the year — and she opens at home against a veteran whose game rewards her strengths: Frech's counterpunching gives young power hitters rhythm, time and a target, and her 17–22 season suggests the legs that made her a top-25 player two years ago are paying interest. Jović's 32–20 career hard-court record at 18 reads like the start of something; her second-round exit here last year was the prologue. First meeting. The teenager's error count is the only variable that keeps this competitive — Frech will make her hit one more ball all afternoon. Jović in two, worked for.
