Koevermans had already rebooked her flight home. The 22-year-old daughter of the former Dutch pro Mark Koevermans came through three rounds of qualifying without dropping a set — six hours and fifty-one minutes on court — straight off a back injury, and told NOS beforehand that she had arrived with no expectations after a week of rain and a five-in-the-morning hotel fire alarm: "I came here without expectations." She started her Grand Slam main-draw debut well enough to make the Dutch headlines say so, and lost the first set 7-5 and then five of the next six games. McNally won 74% of her first-serve points, converted four of six break points and made twenty-five unforced errors to Koevermans's thirty-three, in an hour and forty-two minutes. It was a first meeting. McNally, ranked 64th and with a third round here in 2020 as her best, plays Emma Navarro next.
