At this Stage
A second meeting inside two months — Rome, on clay, was the first — and this one belonged to the more proven grass-courter. Van de Zandschulp, once a fourth-round runner here, dropped a tiebreak and little else, closing with a bagel fourth set behind 50 winners and six breaks of the Kovacevic serve. The American, who had upset Félix Auger-Aliassime on the way to a Hamburg semi-final earlier in the year, converted one break point from eight; grass rarely forgives that arithmetic. Next came Roman Safiullin, the qualifier who had saved match points to stun 12th seed Andrey Rublev — and the Russian edged their five-set tie in a final-set breaker.
