The British wild card took 15th seed Jakub Menšík to a deciding-set tiebreak and lost the whole five-set argument by the finest of margins — 9-7 in the breaker, 159 points to 157 overall. Menšík survives, 5-7 6-3 6-3 3-6 7-6(7), which is the only line the record book keeps; the rest was uncomfortably close to an exit. The Czech advanced to a round-of-64 meeting with Grigor Dimitrov, back on a wild card of his own — a test he wouldn't pass, but at this stage, surviving was the whole job.
