Result

Ninth seed Flavio Cobolli needed two tiebreaks and just under three hours to put away the veteran James Duckworth 7-6(4) 3-6 7-6(3) 6-1 on No.3 Court. Cobolli's extra firepower told over the distance — 51 winners to 32 and 16 aces to eight — and once he edged the third-set breaker the Australian's resistance faded, the Italian racing through the fourth for the loss of a single game. Both men converted only a third of their break points; on grass it came down to who held firmest in the tiebreaks, and that was Cobolli.

At this Stage

Flavio Cobolli's Wimbledon keeps asking him for overtime. The No. 9 seed had dropped the opening set to Mariano Navone in round one before escaping in four (1-6 7-6(5) 6-3 7-6(8)), and James Duckworth — a four-set winner over Tallon Griekspoor — pushed him for nearly three hours here before falling 7-6(4) 3-6 7-6(3) 6-1. Twice in two rounds the Italian has been dragged into tiebreaks; twice he has walked off with the win, which reads as either a warning or a credential depending on your mood. The next question arrives in the last 32, and it is called Karen Khachanov, the No. 19 seed.
