At this Stage

One of them was always going to keep dreaming: an all-qualifier second round with a place in the last 32 guaranteed to whoever seized it. Michael Zheng had arrived via a five-set upset of No. 26 seed Cameron Norrie (6-7(7) 6-2 6-7(2) 6-3 7-6(4)); Nicolás Mejía had ground down Daniel Vallejo in four. Tight for two sets, then not — Zheng won 6-7(4) 7-6(8) 6-1 6-4 in their first meeting, another line on a rapidly rising CV. The reward reads like a dare: a last-32 meeting with No. 3 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime. This, at this stage, is the fixture qualifiers qualify for.
