Result

The second seed Alexander Zverev needed only a late tightening to beat Valentin Royer 6-1 6-3 7-6(3) on No.1 Court. Zverev won 85 percent behind his first serve, struck 37 winners to 15 and 14 aces to three, and cruised through two sets before Royer briefly dug in; a third-set tiebreak closed it out. Royer took his single break-point chance but little else went his way as the title contender moved into the third round.

At this Stage

Round one had asked Alexander Zverev genuine questions — Alexander Blockx dragged him through three tiebreaks, 6-4 6-7(8) 7-6(5) 7-6(0) — so the second seed will have welcomed a quieter shift. Valentin Royer, who had come from a set down to beat wild card Harry Wendelken in round one, kept Zverev out there long enough to force a third-set breaker, but 6-1 6-3 7-6(3) never felt like jeopardy. The serve is humming and the scoreboard is behaving. Next is a last-32 meeting with Marcos Giron — and, at this stage, the draw's second seed is moving exactly as a second seed should.
