At this Stage

Jeļena Ostapenko does not do routine. The former Roland-Garros champion and 2018 Wimbledon semi-finalist piled up 46 winners, 50 unforced errors and 13 double faults against Harriet Dart, and still found a way through, 6-3 3-6 6-4 across two and a half hours. Dart, a home wild card ranked outside the top 150, had Court 17 roaring after taking the second set but couldn't carry the momentum into the third. For Ostapenko the survival mattered more than the style — a second-round date with Antonia Ružić followed, and there, at 6-2 6-0, the tidier version of her game finally turned up.
