At this Stage

At 38, days after finishing runner-up in Eastbourne, Tatjana Maria finally solved Yulia Putintseva. The German's slice-heavy game — grass tennis from an older textbook — coaxed 30 unforced errors from her opponent in a 6-4 6-4 win, Maria's first over Putintseva in more than a decade of trying. Some first-round victories are about the opponent as much as the round, and this one closed a long personal account. It also opened a second-round meeting with 16th seed Iva Jovic — a chapter that closed quickly, 6-1 6-2 — but the ledger with Putintseva, at least, was finally amended.
