At this Stage

For a while this looked like the round's defining upset. Solana Sierra — a three-set winner over Anna Bondár in round one — led seventh seed Coco Gauff 7-4 in the deciding tie-break, having earlier served for a place in the third round. Gauff, so untroubled in a 6-2 6-1 opener against Tamara Korpatsch, took the last six points to escape 6-3 3-6 7-6(7) after 2h 7m, her serve — ten aces to Sierra's none — holding firm while much else wobbled. The record book does not note how close it was, only who advanced, and who advanced was Gauff: into an all-American last-32 meeting with qualifier Claire Liu.
