History

Opened in 1944 as Orchard Field (the source of the airport code ORD) and renamed in 1949 for Lieutenant Commander Edward 'Butch' O'Hare, a Navy fighter ace. Took over Chicago's commercial airline traffic from Midway in the late 1950s after Midway's 6,500-ft runways could no longer handle the new four-engine jets. United and American both run major hubs here; the OMP (O'Hare Modernization Program) reconfigured the runways to a mostly parallel east-west layout over the 2008-2021 period.

More about this airport

About this profile

Reference data (codes, coordinates, elevation, runways, owner, opening date) is curated from each airport's official authority page, the FAA's airport reference system for US airports, NAV CANADA and Transport Canada for Canadian airports, and AFAC and the operating concessionaire for Mexican airports. Latest passenger figures are CY 2023 totals where confidently sourced.

Live METAR and TAF are fetched from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center on each page load. NOTAMs (US airports) are fetched from the FAA NOTAM Search. If a source is unreachable when this page loads, the corresponding section displays an "unavailable" message rather than a blank or stale value.

This data is re-verified on a recurring monthly cadence aligned to the FAA's NASR 28-day cycle.
