Result
Argentina led inside 36 minutes — Messi from the penalty spot (23'), then Di María sweeping in Mac Allister's pass (36') at the end of the tournament's best team move — and looked home until Mbappé scored twice in 97 seconds, a penalty (80') and a snap volley (81'), to force extra time. Messi edged Argentina ahead again (108'); Mbappé completed his hat-trick from the spot (118') to make it 3–3, the first hat-trick in a men's World Cup final since 1966. Emiliano Martínez then denied Kolo Muani at the death and saved from Coman in the shootout, Tchouaméni dragged wide, and Gonzalo Montiel buried the kick that made Argentina world champions for a third time. Argentina are world champions.
