Result
Fritz won more points than Cerundolo — 150 to 148 — and lost. He led 3-0 inside ten minutes and served out both opening sets, and Cerundolo had arrived having won one of his seven Grand Slam meetings with a top-ten player: that one was also against Fritz, also a third round, also after losing the first set 3-6. It turned on a single game. Serving at 3-4 in the fifth, Cerundolo went 0-40 — Fritz had taken seven points in a row and stood two from serving for the match — and saved all three with five straight points, three of them serves Fritz could not return. At 4-4 Fritz broke a shoelace, was given time to fix it, and lost his serve on a netcord that trickled over and a forehand into the net. The two made 54 unforced errors each across three hours and forty minutes; the difference was the first serve, Cerundolo winning 81% of those points against 67% and landing 61% of his deliveries to Fritz's 53%. It is his first fourth round here and his fourth at a major. "I know I'm not the local one, sorry," he told a crowd of nearly 24,000. "Hopefully I can get you all on my side in the next one."

What I said beforehand
The preview, frozen before the first serve. Clearly dated, never rewritten — that's the deal that makes the pick worth anything.
Fritz has not dropped a set and has just played the most one-sided match of his career at a major, conceding two games to Mattia Bellucci in 98 minutes on Arthur Ashe. He was the runner-up here in 2024 and a quarter-finalist in 2025, is 273-164 on hard courts for his career, and has reached the second week in New York for three straight years. Cerundolo, seeded 24th, arrived at his first US Open third round by way of a five-setter against the 36-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff, 7-5 5-7 6-4 2-6 6-3 in the Thursday heat — a match Struff himself said Cerundolo deserved.
