This is the closest match of the round and the ratings agree: 1760 to 1744 on hard-court Elo, sixteen points, a coin flip with a thumb on it. Géa is 21, ranked 87th, and in the main draw only because Casper Ruud's back gave out after Géa had already lost the final qualifying round 3-6 1-6 without winning a service game. He is the second lucky loser in the Open Era to reach the US Open fourth round, after Moutet in 2022, and Monday will be his seventh match at Flushing Meadows counting qualifying. Van de Zandschulp is 30, ranked 70th, and is the more accomplished player by a distance nobody disputes: a quarter-finalist here in 2021 as a qualifier, the man who beat Alcaraz on this court in 2024 and Djokovic at Indian Wells in 2025, and last week the man who took out the sixth seed Alex de Minaur for a tenth career top-ten win. Two things pull the other way. The first is that Géa is playing the best tennis of his life — a maiden tour title at Los Cabos in August over the defending champion Shapovalov, 18-5 on hard courts this season, and a comeback from two sets to one down against Michael Zheng in which he hit 51 winners and won 33 of 46 points at the net. The second is the serve: van de Zandschulp hit sixteen double faults against Bergs and still won, which is the kind of statistic that describes a weapon under stress. I take Géa by the width of the Elo and not a point more, and I would not be surprised by either name.

He beat Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in five, Zachary Svajda in four, and Zheng from two sets to one down after leading 4-1 in the third and losing five games in a row — the third time in 2026 he has beaten Zheng from behind. He came into the fortnight off a maiden tour title in Los Cabos, where he beat Francisco Cerúndolo and then the defending champion Shapovalov, becoming the youngest winner in that tournament's history with three tour-level wins to his name. He was 198th in January. He is 87th now, he is the only French player of either sex in a Slam second week this year, and at 21 he is the youngest Frenchman in the US Open's second week since Gasquet twenty years ago.

He came through qualifying to reach the 2021 US Open quarter-final; he beat Alcaraz in the second round in 2024; he beat Nadal in the Davis Cup in what turned out to be Nadal's last match; he beat Djokovic at Indian Wells in 2025, himself a lucky loser that week. This fortnight he has beaten the sixth seed de Minaur 6-4 7-5 6-2 and then survived Bergs 3-6 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(6) 6-3 in 4h29 while losing the points count 175-171 — two tiebreaks won by the colder head. It is his first Grand Slam second week since Wimbledon 2022 and only the third fourth round of his career, and in May 2024 he was publicly weighing whether to keep playing at all.

- Géa is in the draw because Casper Ruud, the 20th seed, withdrew with a back injury. Géa had already lost the final round of qualifying to Nishesh Basavareddy 3-6 1-6, winning none of his eight service games.
