Sofia Kenin's second match of the week lasted fifty-six minutes. Two nights earlier the 2020 Australian Open champion — a wild card ranked 110th — had beaten Venus Williams 6-2 7-6(6), saving four set points from 2-6 down in the tiebreak, in a match that began at 12:13 a.m., the latest start in US Open history, after Novak Djokovic's four-hour-and-36-minute first-round defeat on the same court. On Arthur Ashe she handed over the first break with a double fault in the opening game, was broken again on set point, and then lost the opening five games of the second set while Jessica Pegula made two unforced errors. She never earned a break point. Pegula, the runner-up here in 2024 and at Cincinnati last month, dropped seven points on serve in the whole match, three of them behind her first, and finished with an unreturnable serve.
