Result
Ten breaks of serve, five each, and two tiebreaks that both finished 7-3: five points separated these two over two and a half hours on the Grandstand. The first four games of the match all went against serve. Bouzkova broke again in the eleventh for 6-5, served for the set and was broken back — the third break lead she had failed to hold in the set — and Swiatek led the tiebreak 4-1 and took it on a forehand error. The second set was the mirror: Bouzkova to 3-0, Swiatek a break down again at 2-4, level both times, and then three set points against her at 5-6 that she saved with two backhands and a risky play at the net. She led the second tiebreak 6-1, missed two match points and converted the third when Bouzkova's backhand flew long. Bouzkova won a higher share of her first-serve points than Swiatek did and made ten fewer unforced errors; what she could not do was hold serve. Swiatek, the 2022 champion here, is 4-0 against her and has still not dropped a set to her. She plays the qualifier Qinwen Zheng next.

What I said beforehand
The preview, frozen before the first serve. Clearly dated, never rewritten — that's the deal that makes the pick worth anything.
Swiatek has conceded five games in each of her two matches — 6-2 6-3 over Wang Xiyu on Monday night, then 6-3 6-2 over Nadia Podoroska in seventy-one minutes on Thursday, a match in which Podoroska's only four break points all arrived in the same game and none of them was taken. She won Toronto in August, reached the Cincinnati semi-finals, and is 12-1 on the American hard courts this summer. Bouzkova has been just as economical: 6-2 6-2 in the first round, 6-2 6-2 in the second, the latter without facing a single break point in sixteen games behind 73% first serves. She is 28 and seeded 25, won the girls' title on these courts in 2014, and is having the best season of her career — titles in Bogota and on grass at Nottingham, and a fourth round at Wimbledon. The problem is the head-to-head. It is 3-0 to Swiatek and has never produced a set: 6-4 6-2 at Roland Garros in 2024, 6-1 6-1 at Wuhan last October, 6-2 6-3 in the Australian Open second round in January. Bouzkova wins points by width, slice and patience, which is the pattern Swiatek's forehand is built to punish.
