Swiatek has won seven of their eight meetings and has not dropped a set this fortnight. Zheng is ranked 121st, came through three rounds of qualifying, and on Saturday beat the 22nd seed Madison Keys from 0-5 down in the deciding set, winning the match by a single point, 98 to 97 — the first qualifier in the US Open women's fourth round since Emma Raducanu in 2021. Hard-court Elo reads that as 82-18 to the Pole, which is what No. 8 against No. 121 should look like and is also the number likeliest to be wrong. Zheng was world No. 4 fifteen months ago. She is a five-time tour titlist, an Australian Open finalist, the reigning Olympic champion, and a quarter-finalist at each of her last two US Opens. The 121 is an artefact of a right elbow that needed surgery in July 2025 and kept her off court until February, and of the rolling ranking points that expired while she was away; the Elo is an artefact of the losing months that followed her return. She told the USTA this week that she had rediscovered her fire, and the Keys match is the first evidence anyone has that she meant it. Against that, Swiatek is the closest thing this half of the draw has to a settled player. She won Toronto in August for a first title since September 2025, she has been through three rounds here for the loss of nothing, and the Bouzkova match — two tiebreaks, two and a half hours, wind — is the kind she was losing in the spring. Zheng has played six matches on these courts to Swiatek's three and four of them went the distance. I take Swiatek, shaded a long way down from the ratings, because the number attached to her opponent is fifteen months out of date and the woman attached to it is not.

75% to winSwiatek has beaten Zheng seven times in eight, on hard courts and on clay, in Grand Slams and at 1000-level, and the one loss came at the Olympics on Roland Garros clay rather than on a surface anything like this one. She won this title in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2025, she is a six-time major champion and a former world No. 1, and she has come through three rounds here without conceding a set — including a two-and-a-half-hour, two-tiebreak win over Bouzkova in the wind, which is exactly the match she was losing earlier in the year. Toronto in August ended a title drought going back to September 2025 and was the first hard evidence that the coaching change to Francisco Roig in April had taken. She has also had two days fewer on court than her opponent.

25% to winZheng is not a No. 121 and everyone including the seeding committee knows it. She is a former world No. 4, the Paris Olympic champion, a 2024 Australian Open finalist and a quarter-finalist at each of her last two US Opens; the ranking is what happens when arthroscopic elbow surgery in July 2025 takes ten months out of a career and the points from a Roland Garros quarter-final and a Rome semi-final expire while you are in a sling. She arrived here without a wild card, won three qualifying rounds to get in, and has now won four matches in nine days — the last of them against the 22nd seed from 0-5 down in the third, by a single point across the whole match. She has beaten Keys twice this season. And she is the only player in this draw who has beaten Swiatek in a semi-final of anything, in Paris in 2024, from 0-4 down in the second set.

- Zheng is the first qualifier to reach the women's fourth round at the US Open since Emma Raducanu in 2021 — and Raducanu won the thing.
- Swiatek leads the head-to-head 7-1. Zheng's win was the Paris 2024 Olympic semi-final, 6-2 7-5 on clay, after which Swiatek said in tears that she had simply blown it.
