At this Stage

Two days after beating Ugo Humbert in the Eastbourne final for his maiden ATP title, Zizou Bergs drew him again in the Wimbledon first round — the kind of scheduling joke the draw rarely attempts. The rematch went deeper: Humbert, the 27th seed, clawed back from two sets down to force a fifth, but Bergs closed it 6-2 7-5 4-6 3-6 6-3 after three hours and 39 minutes, out-hitting the Frenchman 44 winners to 33. Two wins over the same opponent in one week is a statement of arrival however you frame it. Bergs moved on to a round-of-64 meeting with Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria, and kept right on going.
