In the same week he cracked the ATP top 100 for the first time, Jan Choinski gave the home crowd an opener to savour: 6-3 7-5 6-2 over Vít Kopřiva in 99 minutes, built on 18 aces and 90 per cent of first-serve points won. The Briton broke four times and never had his own serve broken — Kopřiva went 0-for-4 on break points — in as clean a serving performance as this first round produced. It carried Choinski into the Wimbledon second round for the second time, where 17th seed Frances Tiafoe waited. He would take the opening set off the American too before the run ended; at this stage, though, the week could hardly have gone better.
