At this Stage

The title defence began with a genuine wobble. Iga Świątek, No. 3 seed and reigning champion, beat Taylor Townsend 6-1 2-6 6-3 on Centre Court, but the middle set made minor history: Townsend became the first player this decade to take a set off Świątek in the opening round of a major, feasting on nine double faults from the champion's racquet. Świątek regrouped in the decider, as champions tend to, and moved on to a last-64 meeting with Karolína Plíšková — since won 6-1 6-3, with far less fuss. The defence survived its first examination; nobody would claim it aced it.
