Result

No scare this time. Two days after being pushed to three sets in her opener, defending champion Iga Świątek was ruthless on Centre Court, beating former finalist Karolína Plíšková 6-1 6-3 in 69 minutes. The world No. 3 won 63 of the 99 points played, took 70% of her first-serve points, and broke the Plíšková serve — long one of the tour's best — repeatedly while hitting 17 winners to just 18 errors. Plíšková, playing on a protected ranking at 34 and a 2021 finalist here, managed two aces but won barely a quarter of her second-serve points. Świątek extends her head-to-head over Plíšková to 4-0 and moves into round three, where the No. 29 seed Alexandra Eala awaits.

At this Stage

Two former world No. 1s meeting on grass for the first time, one of them defending the title. Iga Świątek had been pushed to three sets by Taylor Townsend in her opener; there was no repeat on Centre Court. The third seed took 69 minutes over Karolína Plíšková, 6-1 6-3, extending their head-to-head to 4-0 and halting a comeback that had carried the 2021 finalist from outside the top 600 a year ago to a Nottingham final in June. Świątek's bid to become the first woman to defend the Wimbledon title since Serena Williams in 2016 rolls on to a last-32 meeting with 29th seed Alexandra Eala — and, at this stage, it is gathering pace rather than losing it.
