My pick: Czechia win · locked 2026-06-17 11:25 UTC

Prediction

Czechia by a goal. Both sides lost their openers and the loser here is almost certainly out, but Czechia were the better team in patches against Korea before fading, and South Africa arrive shorn of two players sent off against Mexico — Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane are both suspended. Patrik Schick gives Miroslav Koubek's side a focal point South Africa will struggle to handle, and the suspensions thin an already-young Bafana spine. Expect a tight, nervy game decided by a single Czech goal, around 2-1.

The case for Czechia

45% to win

Czechia led South Korea before conceding twice, and on the balance of that opener they look the more cohesive side. Patrik Schick is a genuine penalty-box threat, Tomáš Souček offers set-piece menace and aerial control, and Adam Hložek gives them a second runner. Against a South Africa team missing two suspended starters and reeling from a chastening defeat to Mexico, the Czechs' greater big-tournament experience and physical edge should be enough to take the three points they need to stay alive.

The case for South Africa

27% to win

South Africa were competitive against Mexico until two red cards wrecked their game plan, and Hugo Broos has built a quick, fearless side around Lyle Foster's running and the creativity of Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis. Ronwen Williams is one of the tournament's better goalkeepers. If they channel the frustration of the opener, defend their box with discipline and use their pace in transition, they have the legs to punish a Czech side that tired badly late against Korea.

Both cases written 2026-06-17, before kickoff — they freeze into the record exactly as written, however the match goes. The percentages are mine, quoted to a decimal because false precision is funnier — the unclaimed 28% belongs to the draw.

The briefing

Storylines

  • A near-elimination decider: both teams lost their openers, so the loser will all but certainly exit the World Cup with a game to spare.
  • South Africa must reshuffle without the suspended Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, both sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Mexico.
  • Czechia, who led South Korea before losing 2-1, lean on Serie A scorer Patrik Schick and the aerial threat of captain Tomáš Souček.
  • At 74, Czechia's Miroslav Koubek is the tournament's oldest coach; Hugo Broos, an Africa Cup of Nations winner with this group, leads a youthful Bafana Bafana.

The coaches

Miroslav Koubek Czechia

At 74 the tournament's oldest coach; handed the job mid-qualifying after Ivan Hašek and favours a compact three-at-the-back built around Schick and Souček.

Hugo Broos South Africa

The 2019 AFCON-winning Belgian has rebuilt South Africa around a fast, youthful core; now must patch a back line and midfield missing two suspended starters.
