CzechiavsMexico

My pick: Mexico win · locked 2026-06-23 12:36 UTC

Prediction

Mexico to edge it on home soil at the Estadio Azteca. El Tri are unbeaten on six points, have already qualified and can seal top spot by avoiding defeat, while Czechia, third on a single point, almost certainly need a win to go through. Javier Aguirre's side welcome Cesar Montes back from suspension and may rotate, but a Mexico team playing in front of a partisan crowd at altitude has the edge over a Czech side that has twice dropped points from winning positions. Czechia must chase, which should leave gaps for Mexico to exploit. 2-1 Mexico.

The case for Czechia

24% to win

Czechia have led in both their matches and need only to recover the cutting edge that deserted them late against South Africa. Patrik Schick and Adam Hlozek give Koubek a Bundesliga-tested front pair, and the wing-back system can stretch a possibly-rotated Mexico. With qualification on the line, a do-or-die Czech side could find the urgency to win at altitude.

The case for Mexico

46% to win

Mexico are unbeaten with two clean sheets and the comfort of already being through, letting Aguirre pick a strong side or freshen it without pressure. The Azteca crowd and roughly 2,240m altitude favour the acclimatised hosts, and Romo's goal against South Korea showed their midfield can find the net. Needing only a draw to top the group, El Tri hold all the cards.

Both cases written 2026-06-23, before kickoff — they freeze into the record exactly as written, however the match goes. The percentages are mine, quoted to a decimal because false precision is funnier — the unclaimed 30% belongs to the draw.
