Prediction

France to take third place. Deschamps' side were the more complete team over the tournament — unbeaten until Spain edged the semi-final, scoring in every game before that — and carry the deeper attack in Mbappé, Dembélé and Olise. England will be hurting after conceding twice in the last five minutes to Argentina, and both coaches are expected to rotate for a match neither wanted. If France's first-choice front line starts, their quality should tell. France by a goal, though a flat, rotated bronze final could go either way.

The case for France

46% to win

France have been a level above most of the field: six straight wins before the semi-final, goals in every match, and a forward line — Mbappé, Dembélé, Olise, Doué — that can win any game in a single transition. Even in a rotated bronze final that ceiling is higher than England's, and Deschamps will want to close out his last tournament in charge with a win. If the first-choice attackers start, France should have too much.

The case for England

28% to win

England, under Thomas Tuchel, have shown they can grind and dig in — ten men to beat Mexico, extra time past Norway, a semi-final led until the 85th minute. Jude Bellingham has been among the players of the tournament and Harry Kane keeps scoring; if the response to a gutting loss is right and the wide areas are protected, England have the match-winners to take the bronze and leave North America on a high.

Both cases written 2026-07-15, before kickoff — they freeze into the record exactly as written, however the match goes. The percentages are mine, quoted to a decimal because false precision is funnier — the unclaimed 26% belongs to the draw.

At this Stage

The bronze final nobody circled in advance. France arrive off a 0-2 semi-final defeat to Spain that ended a six-match winning run and denied the departing Didier Deschamps a trophy send-off; England off a crueller exit still — 1-0 up on Argentina with five minutes left before Lionel Messi's late double turned it. Both are the tournament's nearly-men now, and both are likely to rotate: this is a match for pride, third place and a medal, not a place in Sunday's final. For France it is a last look at a golden generation's supporting cast; for Tuchel's England, a chance to leave North America on a win after a first deep World Cup run in years. Whoever loses finishes fourth and goes home.

The briefing

Storylines

  • Two heavyweights meet in the bronze final: France, denied a trophy send-off for the departing Didier Deschamps by Spain, and England, who led Argentina until Lionel Messi's late double. Both fell at the semi-final stage within 24 hours.
  • The play-off nobody wants to play: World Cup third-place matches often become rotation exercises and open, high-scoring affairs — both France and England are likely to hand minutes to fringe players.
  • France chase a second straight top-three finish after their 2022 runners-up campaign; England, in a first deep World Cup run in years under Thomas Tuchel, look to convert a semi-final appearance into a first World Cup medal since 1966.
  • FIFA's neutrality policy keeps French and English officials away from the match; a neutral crew, still to be appointed, will referee at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The coaches

Didier Deschamps France

The 2018 World Cup winner, in charge since 2012 and leaving after this tournament, has France unbeaten and set up to strike in transition through Mbappé, Dembélé and Olise.

Thomas Tuchel England

The German coach has England grinding out results — topping Group L, surviving a red card to beat Mexico, and edging Norway in extra time — and into a first World Cup semi-final since 2018, with Bellingham and Kane his match-winners.
