Two Americans, one of whom has been here three times before and one of whom has never been here at all. Tiafoe is a two-time US Open semi-finalist, into his fourth quarter-final at this tournament, and he has just beaten Daniil Medvedev — a man who had won six of their seven meetings and had not dropped a set all fortnight — 7-6(1) 6-4 7-6(6). Michelsen has not lost a set in four matches: twelve from twelve, through Cinà, the No. 16 seed Nakashima, Mérida and the No. 27 seed Etcheverry, and he is 22 years old with no ATP title to his name. Tennis Abstract's hard-court Elo had Tiafoe 1883.7 to Michelsen 1827.1 as of 31 August, which works out at about 60-40 over five sets — but that snapshot predates the entire main draw and therefore every match either man has played here, and Michelsen's has been the more impressive fortnight. The head-to-head reads 2-0 Tiafoe, both in straight sets, but one was indoors in Dallas and the other was on clay in Houston; they have never met on an outdoor hard court. The number I keep coming back to is court time: Tiafoe has spent 11h24 reaching this, including 3h48 in the first round from two sets to one down, and Michelsen has spent 8h50. Two and a half hours is a real subtraction in a best-of-five. I take Tiafoe, but only just, and mostly because the last time this stage asked him a question he answered it against a better player than the one in front of him now.

58% to winTiafoe has been to the last four here twice, in 2022 and 2024, and knows exactly what this week costs. He has beaten Michelsen both times they have played, dropping no sets. His 2026 has a first ATP 500 title in it — Halle in June, over Taylor Fritz — plus a Cincinnati final in August, and the Medvedev win was his tour-leading 25th hard-court win of the year and his sixth top-ten win at a major. He is 10-0 for his career on Louis Armstrong and moves to Arthur Ashe for this, a court where he has already played two US Open semi-finals; Michelsen has not set foot on it this fortnight, having played on Stadium 17 and the Grandstand. Tiafoe has also been working since the start of the season with Mark Kovacs, a biomechanist who has known him since he was twelve, on the serve — which is the shot that just out-aced nobody and still held off fourteen aces from the other end.
The case for Alex Michelsen
42% to winMichelsen has not dropped a set, and the one that came closest he won from two set points down in a tiebreak he took 8-6, finishing it with a smash off a 24-stroke rally. He beat the No. 16 seed in straight sets in the second round and the No. 27 seed in straight sets in the fourth. He is fresher by two and a half hours, six years younger, two inches taller, and he beat Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells in March, which is a top-ten win on an outdoor hard court in a best-of-three. His own account of how he beat Nakashima is the most revealing thing either man has said this fortnight — he had watched one game of a Montreal match, spotted a serve pattern, and read it twice on the day. That is not a shotmaker talking; it is someone who solves matches. He has said he likes being under the radar, and there is no radar left.

Storylines
- At least one American man is guaranteed a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2024, when Taylor Fritz beat Tiafoe in the first all-American Grand Slam semi-final since 2005. No American man has won a major since Andy Roddick here in 2003.
- Five American men reached this fourth round — Tiafoe, Michelsen, Shelton, Tien and Paul — the most at any major since 1995, when eight of them made the US Open round of 16 and three reached the semi-finals.
- Tiafoe is 10-0 for his career on Louis Armstrong Stadium, where all four of his 2026 matches have been played. Asked about the record before the third round he said: "Dude, don't say that. Dude, I know that; you know that. Just let it go, bro, but it's a pretty good record, though." The quarter-final moves him to Arthur Ashe.
