The head-to-head and the ratings tell two different stories, and the gap between them is the match. Medvedev has won all six of their tour-level meetings, every one on a hard court, the most recent in January this year 6-3 6-2; Tiafoe's only win came in the second round of clay-court qualifying in 2015, when he was seventeen. Six from six is about as one-sided as a rivalry between two top-fifteen players gets. Hard-court Elo, though, has them 35 points apart — about 55-45 — because Tiafoe has been the better player this season on results: 39-17 to Medvedev's 35-16, a Cincinnati final in August, and a US Open record over the last four years that includes semi-finals in 2022 and 2024 against Medvedev's one quarter-final since he won the title here in 2021. He won this tournament in 2021 and his career hard-court record of 366-132 is the deepest of anyone left in the men's draw. He has not dropped a service game cheaply all fortnight — Rinderknech got the only break of Friday's match and immediately gave it back — and he made eighteen unforced errors in three sets, half what his opponent managed. At 6'6" he returns from deep and absorbs pace, which is exactly the wrong wall for a player who wins by generating it.
The case for Frances Tiafoe
40% to winTiafoe has had the better season, 39-17 against 35-16, and reached the Cincinnati final in August. He is the better recent US Open player: semi-finals in 2022 and 2024, twenty-six career wins here, and a seventh consecutive third round. Hard-court Elo has this at barely 55-45, which is a truer read of where the two are now than a head-to-head whose first six entries stretch back to 2019. He plays his best tennis in this stadium and in front of this crowd, and he beat Vacherot on Friday for the loss of thirteen unforced errors — as clean a match as he has played this fortnight.
