Result

The British wildcard's dream fortnight continues. Arthur Fery came from a set down to beat Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen — the man who eliminated No. 4 seed Ben Shelton in round one — 5-7 7-6(3) 6-3 6-3 and reach the third round. Virtanen's 16 aces kept him alive early, but Fery was the far cleaner player where it mattered: 43 winners against just 27 unforced errors, to Virtanen's 45 errors. After splitting the first two sets, Fery converted his chances (three breaks from nine points) while facing exactly one break point across the last two sets.

At this Stage

Otto Virtanen owned the tournament's loudest result so far — a five-set, two-tiebreak removal of No. 4 seed Ben Shelton (6-4 3-6 6-7(8) 6-2 7-6(9)) — and with Shelton gone, this corner of the draw stood wide open. The local walked through it. Arthur Fery, the British wild card who had recovered from a set down against Damir Džumhur in round one, did it again, beating the Finnish qualifier 5-7 7-6(3) 6-3 6-3. A first Grand Slam third round was on offer to both men; it belongs to Fery, who moves on to a last-32 meeting with Zizou Bergs. Wild cards are usually souvenirs by this stage. This one is still playing.
